I have decided to make a difference by creating my very own fundraising event for Vinnies QLD. 

I have recently become involved in a mentoring program ("The Buddies Program") targeted at disadvantaged youth, that is run by the St Vincent de Paul Society. The program involves organising fun days for groups of financially disadvantaged kids each month, providing them with a break from their home environment, some positive role models, and most importantly a fun day to put a smile on their faces!

Currently, the program runs on a very limited budget, meaning that the activities typically organised include days at the park or similar free/cheap activities. While the kids do enjoy these days, I know from personal experience growing up like many of these kids, that one of the most isolating experiences for financially disadvantaged children at school is the inability to properly join into conversations about fun activities you partook in during weekends and school holidays. This can lead to withdrawal and have serious consequences on all areas of a child's life.

Therefore, I am fundraising to increase the budget for the program so that we can give these kids some awesome experiences they wouldn't otherwise get the opportunity to have given their family's financial position. Proposed activities for this year include: taking them to soccer/AFL/league matches; adventurous activities that are not only fun but great confidence building experiences (e.g., rock climbing, high ropes course, outdoor laser skirmish), and fun educational experiences (e.g., Planetarium, aquarium). My biggest goal is to build up to a theme park visit at the end of the year - something all the kids have said they would love to do!
